Brewin Dolphin Scottish Series, Corby 33 wins again, seven 1sts

Corby 33 beating all A35s and all J109s. Rockabill V 1st overall with 1,2,1,1,1,1 and Corby 33 Contango 6th overall.

On the whole there were no major surprises in the IRC results with just a couple of changes in placings, with a notable exception in Division One IRC  ,with the  emergence of Tony Fox’s A35 Gringo to take second place.  Gringo who was lying in sixth place yesterday, today scored two seconds and with a discard of 19 this was enough to bring him to second place. The winner, Rockabill, sailed by Mel Collins had five firsts and a second in the series in what was possibly, with 29 boats, the most competitive of the classes.  The best of the J109s, Joker 2, was third.

RSYC 2-handed ‘Solent Double’

A total of 65 boats gathered in the central Solent on Saturday 10th April for the start of the 30th year of RSYC Double Handed racing with the Coors Light Spring Solent Double. Although we had a ninety minute wait for the wind to make a steady appearance, the five classes, 2 IRC, 2 Club and 1 multihull began their starts at around 1130 in a light SE wind and a west-going tide.

The fleet beat their way east up the northern shore to stay out of the tide before making for Ryde Middle, then running back down to Flying Fish. With the tide under the boats, there was barely enough wind to fill symmetric spinnackers; asymmetrics appeared to fare better by gybeing down to the mark. The plan was to beat back to the first mark before a finish at 'RORC' but the wind had other ideas and by around 2PM, just on the turn of the tide, it became patchy and the Race Committee made a great job of shortening class 4 at Mackley Construction and all other classes at SE Ryde Middle.

Cowes Week 2009

Day six of Cowes Week saw mixed conditions that provided challenging racing across the 37 classes, despite an unpromising weather forecast.

"It's going to be another tricky day," said regatta CEO Stuart Quarrie as competitors were getting ready to go afloat.

Probably the star of day one, however, was John Corson’s Corby 33 Salamander XX. Thriving in the conditions which caused so much pain, quite literally in some cases, for others, the crew didn’t put a foot wrong and were rewarded with three first places for their efforts. “This really was a good day for us,” said foredeck crew Stevie Corson. “We’re the second fastest on handicap, but the smallest boat in the class. But we got good starts, managed to get where we wanted to be on the first beat and, once the spinnaker was up on the leeward leg, we were able to extend. “She’s a quick, wee boat, very responsive – we managed to sail smart and we just have to go out and continue to do that. Another bullet would seal it for us, but we’re not complacent.”

Also producing a starring performance at the event, was John Corson’s Corby 33 Salamander XX – she, too, posted a scoreline of four bullets, but the discard of a fifth for team Salamander was ultimately all that lay between them and the overall championship.

Fairly heart-breaking, perhaps, for the crew which, last year missed out on the overall trophy by a mere half point, after a similarly stellar performance.

Corson and crew, like the Djinn team, however, really did sail away with the competition with a clean sweep total of just four points, leaving Ian and Graham Thomson’s Sloop John T on eight points to take second place.

Closest and most exciting racing today was in IRC Class 3 where Nigel Bigg's Christie Cancer Care, the J109, has consistently strengthened their challenge for the overall Scottish Series Trophy with a string of four back to back wins in this highly competitive fleet. Two more wins today were hard won against John Corson's Clyde based Corby 33 Salamander XX. Christie Cancer Care is ahead of three past Scottish Series Trophy winners in the form of John Highcock who is tactician on Salamander.

David & Jackie Riley’s Corby 33, No Retreat came out on top, but only by half a point from Chris & Hannah Neve’s, First 34.7 No Doubt. Nick and Suzy Jones’ First 34.7, Astarte was third in class. "Paul Blowers was outstanding on tactics for us this weekend and deserves all the credit. He was also mean to me and extremely kind to my wife so he really got everything spot on!" joked David Riley, "I would also say a big thank you to designer, John Corby who has been extremely helpful and supportive."

The New York based Corby 33 'Eclipse' wins first two races.

We were very fortunate to get off any races yesterday. With the expertiece of Charlie Powers as PRO for the regatta, he made some good moves to find a breeze line and get both races in. We would like to thank the efforts of all at CYC for hosting the committee boat and after race BBQ. We would also like to thank LHYC for all its work in the preperation of organizing the race and making it the success it is today. Each division was close, with both Spin. 2 and JAM having the same boats switching first and second in both races. In Spin 1, the new Colby 33, Eclipse took bullets in both races.
