Rolex Commodores Cup 2008

  

The main event begins on Sunday 29th June, with the first race scheduled for 10.30AM on Monday 30th June, but there has been no shortage of activity since close of challenges for the 9th biennial Rolex Commodores’ Cup 2008. Organiser, the Royal Ocean Racing Club, has had to deal with last minute changes to the British Blue team following the IRC Nationals, the French making their final team selections at the last possible moment and the usual amendments to ratings. The teams are leaving nothing to chance. Every advantage is a good advantage and no detail is being overlooked. Fifteen teams, comprising a total of forty-five yachts spread over six nations will be on the start line next week all fired up in anticipation of a highly competitive event. In the battle of the Designers/Manufacturers, Beneteau, X-Yachts, Mills and Ker come out top with six yachts each, and Archambault have five.

WIORA & NORA West Coast Championships 2008

Conor Ronan and the Ruthless crew win IRC Class 2 overall.

I am just back from a very enjoyable two days racing with Conor Ronan and the Ruthless crew on their Corby 26.  This years WIORA and NORA regatta was being run under the banner of the Cliften boat club.  It was to be a four day event sailed with a variety of courses including windward leeward, triangles and a longer coastal type race. This years regatta was a credit to the Club with excellent organisation and top class race management.

Conor Ronan has only been racing now for a little over 18 months and is on a very steep learning curve!  He has taken advantage of working with North Sails Ireland to get the best from his new boat in the shortest possible time.  This included kitting the boat out with 100% North Sails from new and also taking advantage of our coaching and racing services.  Personally I have only raced with this team twice but with additional coaching from my colleage Maurice O’Connell and the determination of this young crew has paid dividends.

When I arrived in Cliften I was greated with the news that we needed to win at least three of the remaining four races to have a chance of winning our class!  Quite a tall order as class two IRC is very competative and has a good mix of boats almost all bigger than the Corby 26.  Normally having a bigger boat is an advantage in stronger winds or choppy water but we were lucky to find my first day with the team bring us very light winds flat water and blazing sunshine!  We had two great races taking a 2^nd and then a 1^st overall for the day.  The Corby excells in the light winds but even with this advantage we were pushed hard all day by the Humphrys ¾ toner Marissa IX.  Having a dedicated 3DL Light Genoa was a great help powering us along in the flat water for the day.

Day two started with rain and strong winds, the more normal conditions for the West Coast or Ireland.  Heading out for the start I was wondering how we would perform against the fleet in the 16-25 knots forecast?  Two great races followed and against the odds we managed to win them both by small but significant margins.  This final win was enough to take us to the top of the leader board and secure the Class 2 IRC overall prize.

I was delighted with the performance of this little Corby boat and was impressed by her ability in the stronger winds.  I also have to say that the Ruthless crew are a pleasure to sail with and as time passes they will become a force to be reckoned with in Class two.

IRC National Championship Points: The overall prize for the IRC National Championships 

will be awarded to the yacht with the lowest resultant score when the yacht’s total score 

(less discard) is divided by the number of entries in her Class plus 2. 

For the purposes of scoring classes Super Zero and Zero may be combined and constitute 

one class.

Lambay Race

Howth Yacht Club's annual regatta took place on Saturday 7th June with the traditional Lambay 

Races  sponsored by Citroen and its local dealer Tom Walsh Motors in Baldoyle. The 173 entries, 

included North and South side clubs, were spread over 15 classes. After their independent starts, 

the Cruisers and One Design fleets converged on the East side of Lambay Island in light winds 

and brilliant sunshine.

Corby 26 design note

Despite being very slightly longer than the older 25 design, the main difference with this newer boat is the centre of buoyancy which is much further forward. This results in a smoother and faster hull shape but also requires the bulb weight to be further forward as well, hence the T-keel.

Race report  – Corby 2903 Gotcha!

The morning of 25th May turned out to be different to any forecast published by the authorities in that it was wet wet wet. As the boats gathered off Pendennis for the start the mist was low on the headlands and St. Anthony lighthouse was sounding its baleful low moaning foghorn.

The wind was from the NE at about 12K true giving a 10 mile dead beat to Gull Rock. The Black Rock end of the line was favoured with Per Elise, Double Jeopardy and Gotcha! making good starts off around Porthmellin head.

Gotcha!, despite sailing 2 handed rounded Gull rock near the front of the pack and ahead of J92 Double Jeopardy and only 2 mins behind J105 Orijin. Per Elise was the favourite however at the turning point on handicap and was sailing well in the lumpy 12 knot conditions.

A 12 mile broad reach saw the J109 Jacoby and Ixthyos pull away, with Per Elise again doing well in the lightening winds. Gotcha! had its hands full sailing 2 handed and launched its running spinnaker a little later than most.

Mannacles bouy off the Lizard proved as difficult as ever with a large Easterly swell rolling in, the fleet bunched up as the winds eased and they tried to make headway against the tide. Double Jeopardy and Gotcha! seized the moment and sailed inside the Mannacle rocks into favourable tides, a move that payed off once the tide eased and the wind increased.

A long tight reach back to Falmouth entrance, with Double Jeopardy, Gotcha! and Per Elise leading the pack back into Falmouth. Once past the docks, there was a final spinnaker sprint all the way up to Flushing for the finish.
